One year after the July 28, 2024, presidential election, Voluntad Popular (VP) said that Edmundo González’s victory “lives on in every struggle” of the Venezuelan people, even though Nicolás Maduro’s regime refuses to recognize it.
“We honor the strength of every Venezuelan who made this victory possible. Because although the dictatorship tries to rewrite history, there is a truth it cannot erase: on July 28 (28J) the people spoke, and they did so decisively,” the party wrote on X. “That victory lives on in every struggle, in every political prisoner who resists, in every exile who does not forget, in every citizen who does not give up.”
The orange party recalled that on that day millions of people went to vote “with a single force: that of change, and with a single face: that of Edmundo González, symbol of unity and hope.”
They described the 2024 election on 28J as an “indelible page in our republican history,” and stated that the Venezuelan people won “decisively, in peace and with dignity,” despite the absence of guarantees and amid threats and persecution.
“It belonged to all of us who worked for a democratic way out, even knowing that we were facing a dictatorship,” the message said.
The party also denounced that the regime’s response was repression, with more than 2,500 arrests and at least 13 killings after the electoral process. “They tried to silence a victory that already belonged to everyone. But they couldn’t. They haven’t been able to. And they won’t,” they stated.
The message closed with a commitment to keep that struggle alive.
“Today, more than ever, we reaffirm our commitment to the mandate of 28J: to achieve a democratic transition, free Venezuela and give its people back their freedom. We do not give up. We do not forget. We do not rest. And we will be free,” they concluded.
